is the Arabic term for "cover" (noun), based on the root
حجب meaning "to veil, to cover (verb), to screen, to shelter"
In some Arabic-speaking countries and Western countries, the word
hijab
primarily refers to women's head and body covering, but in Islamic
scholarship, hijab is given the wider meaning of modesty, privacy,
and morality. Commercially the word Hijab is the product name used
for Islamic scarf or head cover. Other terms used for Hijab ( head
cover or scarf ) is Shayla also known as
khimar in some countries which is usually much bigger in
size than hijab so when wrapped around head it covers shoulders and
reach till below bust level.
Hijab is available in two main shapes square and
rectangular, elder Muslim women prefer the square hijab for it's
simple way of wrapping, young Muslim women prefer the rectangular
hijab as it could be wrapped in different stylish ways. Minimum
Required size for a hijab (shayla) to cover shoulder and reach below
bust level is 29.5" x 70.8" / 75 cm x 180 cm.
